Fighting Cancer is a Team Effort

Cancer has touched many lives here at State Fund and we are proud to take action and support the American Cancer Society (ACS) – one step at a time!
On February 8, our CEO, Vern Steiner, accepted the “Game Changer” award from ACS. In partnership with the NFL®, ACS holds a fundraiser and celebration each year prior to the Super Bowl and this year Vern was there to accept the award on behalf of State Fund. Although this was not the first ACS event of this kind, Vern is the first CEO to be named a Game Changer.
During his acceptance speech, Vern credited the entire State Fund team for our participation in ACS events over the past few years and shared some of our personal stories. In fact, in 2021, thanks to the support of many of our employees, State Fund contributed more than $100,000 to the fight against cancer.
This year, State Fund once again joined the three-week ACS Fit2Be Cancer Free Step Challenge from April 7 – 28, where we came together as a team to complete 100,848 miles, putting us over our 100,000 mile goal. With this accomplishment, State Fund is donating $100,000 to ACS partner organizations in California.
Overall, State Fund finished in 2nd place nationwide among 47 participating organizations, all walking in the fight against cancer. Besides achieving our step goal, State Fund also earned the ACS Mission Impact Award, which honors the organization with the largest monetary donation.
The Fit2Be event includes a one-day (24 hour) Fit2Be Cancer Free CEO Challenge with participants from around the country. Vern took first place in this competition with 142,296 steps, which is 81.42 miles! This amazing feat gave him a three-peat, as he has won each time he has entered!
State Fund is inspired to keep our momentum going and is already looking toward the next challenge to help fight cancer!
